Starting Your Own Business
Are you an entrepreneur? Do you really want to start a business? If your
answer is yes, here are some helpful hints that will enhance your
success.
Commitment. Starting a business is not easy and the single most
important factor is your personal commitment. It typically takes up to
five years for a new business to reach profitable levels.
Need. Starting a business takes a lot of initiative. First, you must
determine whether or not there is a need for the proposed business in
your market. You also need to analyze your market to determine the
potential for profitability. Are there enough buyers? Who are your
competitors?
Preparation. Starting a business takes a tremendous amount of
preparation. It makes sense to develop a business plan, set financial
projections, and prepare an income & expense statement for the first 12
months along with a projected profit and loss statement for the first
five years.
Marketing. You need to know your business’ competitive advantages when
creating a marketing plan. How can you make your business unique? How
can you reach your market? Communicating the advantages of your business
will be key in bringing people through your door.
Capital. It is important to also remember that the number one reason
that a new business fails is lack of capital. Be sure to have a good
source of financing in place.
Foresight. Have the knowledge to put together the right team of players
to make your business successful. Hire wisely, train your staff on your
product and expectations. In addition, choose an accountant, banker, and
consultant that have an understanding of your business.
For more information on starting your own business, access the
SBA website. You will
be able to work though a Start-Up Checklist, take a Quiz for Small
Business Success, learn how to apply for a State Business License & an
Employer ID Number, and much, much more. It’s the site that can get your
business started on the road to success.
